  Welcome to the Old Dairy

Timble lies within the geographical area of the Mid-Washburn Valley covering the parishes of Blubberhouses, Fewston, Norwood and Timble. The valley is extensively farmed but also contains large tracts of woodland, especially bordering the reservoirs of Thruscross, Fewston, Swinsty and Lindley.
Cattle and sheep are raised in the valley and there is a decreasing grouse population on the heather covered moors.
Much of the valley was historically part of the ancient Forest of Knaresborough, a royal hunting preserve. In Tudor and Jacobean times, the thriving wool industry enabled the Dales sheep farmers to build solid stone farmhouses and barns, many of which survive today, though the resurgence of the value of wool in Victorian times allowed many of the old houses to be replaced by larger Victorian farmhouses. The original stone houses would have been thatched, but are mainly now roofed in Yorkshire stone slates.

The village boasts the sum total of 46 occupied properties, a public house, a Methodist chapel and the heart of our community, The Robinson Library. The library is a registered charity and former schoolhouse but today stages many social functions.
Foundations at the public house, The Timble Inn, date back to 1200 and it is rumoured that Dick Turpin stopped at the inn on his fateful ride from London to York.
The chapel was built in 1835 for the purpose of providing a day school and Sunday School. The Bradley family have been involved with the chapel since the 1930's and during the 1940's lead a flourishing Sunday School. The Bradley family were also former owners of 'The Old Dairy' until it was sold along with the cattle barn in the 1990's. Lena Bradley still lives opposite the property in the former farmhouse.

The surrounding area is perfect for walking, cycling, sightseeing and fishing. We are 5 minutes walk from the reservoirs of Fewston and Swinsty-also ideal spots for walking and fly fishing. Day tickets can be obtained from the office in the main car park.

Our situation is central for visiting Harrogate, Skipton, Ilkley, Otley, Pateley Bridge, Ripon, Knaresborough and York. Take your pick from the abundance of tourist attractions, country houses, gardens, historic sites, beautiful towns and villages, restaurants and pubs.

One thing we can guarantee, is not fine Caribbean Sunshine, but a very warm welcome when you return for many repeat visits. Yorkshire is crammed with more than you can manage in a 1 or 2 week stay, so you will be back!
